ABOUT 50 METRES
50 METRES: OUR SWIMMING POOLS was supported by the SG50 Celebration Fund. The full-colour illustrated book commemorates Singapore’s public swimming pools, from the very first public swimming complexes at Mount Emily and Yan Kit, to the integrated swimming complexes in Jurong, Bukit Panjang and Sengkang. Each section comprises personal accounts by more than 50 Singapore residents. 50 METRES (1st edition) is available at all public library branches of the National Library.
HOW IT BEGAN
For several months from the beginning of 2015, Kucinta Books called on residents who had a story to recall, or a quick quip to share, about any public swimming pool in Singapore. We explained that the story could be a personal memory, or about a school or family event, and it could be formal or casual, serious or funny. In return for their personal account, each contributor received one complimentary copy of the SG50 book edition.
Our book-making progress was updated on this page as well as on the following online sites:

In 2017, we published an expanded edition of 50 METRES, titled GREAT LENGTHS: SINGAPORE'S SWIMMING POOLS, and added old photographs of the swimming pools as well as interviews with the country's top aquatic athletes, including Yip Pin Xiu & Theresa Goh and the diving twins Timothy & Mark Lee. The book is available for sale from major bookstores and our company.
PRAISE FOR 50 METRES
"On this island surrounded by water, public swimming pools are within reach of every resident. Visiting a pool to cool off or for recreation has become a common part of our lives. Written from the first person’s perspective, the stories in 50 Metres relate the Singaporean’s experience at public swimming pools since the beginning of our history, and are endearing to read."
Amanda Lim, women’s 50m freestyle gold medallist, 28th SEA Games
"Swimming pools! Who could ever resist taking a dip in one? Delightfully illustrated, 50 Metres and its collection of memories of public pools past and present kicks up enough of a splash to reawaken that irresistible urge to dive right in."
Jerome Lim, award-winning blogger, The Long and Winding Road
"50 Metres is such a joy to read. It is original, fresh and a very comprehensive collection of memories about our swimming pools, both from and for Singaporeans. I am impressed by the skill and accuracy of the drawings, especially considering that some pools are not in existence any more."
Tia Boon Sim, founder, Urban Sketchers Singapore, and artist-in-residence, Temasek Polytechnic
